HLTH 3202 Topics in Public Health: Peer Health Education 1

HLTH3202 is a course that focuses on peer health education and leadership.  The course is a multidisciplinary overview of theory and standards of practice intended to prepare students to become peer health educators.  This will include an in-depth, intersectional look at mental health, sexual and interpersonal violence prevention and alcohol and other drug education, outreach and prevention.

Course Description and Objectives:

The Center for Wellness Promotion staff teach the semester long course. Students will be trained to plan, implement, and evaluate health education presentations and programs for UNC Charlotte.  By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of Peer Health Education
  2. Be able to effectively facilitate presentations, discussions and activities
  3. Be able to make referrals to on-campus resources/professionals
  4. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication

Students will learn about health topics including alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, stress, mental health, nutrition, body image, sexual health, sexual assault, relationship violence, and healthy relationships.

Course Description and Objectives:

The Center for Wellness Promotion staff teach the semester long course. This course is designed to challenge and expand students’ Peer Health 1 knowledge, beliefs and perceptions about health and wellness through exercises in self-examination and open dialogue. This course will also increase knowledge about health and wellness among peer health students and the UNC Charlotte community in an inclusive and non-judgmental way. This course also provides students with the opportunity to plan, implement, and evaluate health and wellness-related programs and events for the UNC Charlotte community. You must have taken Peer Health 1 to take Peer Health 2.  By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Develop, implement, and evaluate health and wellness presentations and demonstrate group facilitation skills.
  2. List and discuss on-campus resources for health information.
  3. Facilitate group discussions on health and wellness topics.
