Wellness Ambassadors

The BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network is the oldest and largest collegiate peer education program focusing on student health and safety issues. It began in 1975 on one college campus in Florida due to the motivation, determination, and leadership of students. Today, with over 1000 collegiate affiliates in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, campuses have formed peer education groups which strive to help students make responsible decisions through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and positive campus activities. The BACCHUS and GAMMA philosophy is that “students can play a uniquely different role in encouraging their peers to consider, talk honestly about, and develop responsible habits concerning alcohol, sex, tobacco, and other related health and safety issues.” It is the mission of the Network to actively promote peer education as a useful element of campus health, safety, and wellness efforts.

The Wellness Ambassador Peer Education Team at UNC Charlotte is affiliated with the national BACCHUS Network.  Peer Educators will become Peer Education Certified through BACCHUS and will have the opportunity to attend and present at national and regional BACCHUS Conferences. Students involved in the Wellness Ambassador Peer Education Team must be passionate about health and wellness topics, and ready to start talking to their peers! Health topics addressed by peer educators include, but are not limited to alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, stress, mental health, nutrition, body image, sexual health, sexual assault, relationship violence, and healthy relationships.

Students Will:

  • Promote a non-judgmental, accepting attitude and environment
  • Complete the Peer Education Certification process through the BACCHUS NETWORK
  • Increase their knowledge about healthier lifestyle choices
  • Practice healthier lifestyle choices
  • Develop, plan, promote, implement, and evaluate programs and campaigns at UNCC
  • Present wellness programs to classrooms
  • Refer to the Wellness Ambassador document for a further description of Peer Education.

Students interested in becoming a Wellness Ambassador must complete and submit an online application (located on the Feed tab) and we will be in touch!    Deadline for new applicants for the Spring 2017 Semester is January 23, 2017!  We look forward to speaking with you about how you can help others at UNC Charlotte!   Please contact Leslie Robinson with any questions you have.
