BASICS Substance Abuse Education at the UNC Charlotte Center for Wellness Promotion
The Center for Wellness Promotion (CWP) at UNC Charlotte provides assessments and intervention for students who are found in violation of the university’s alcohol or marijuana policy. Students who receive a Campus Appearance Ticket (CAT) for alcohol and/or drug violations will be required to meet with either the Housing Office or the Dean of Students Office. These students may be sanctioned to the Wellness Promotion Department for an alcohol and/or drug assessment.
Students who are sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion will be required to meet with a BASICS staff member, one-on-one, for an initial 15-minute intake appointment. At the discretion of the BASICS staff, students may be required to complete the BASICS alcohol and/or drug education program in addition to the initial intake appointment. The BASICS program consists of two, one-hour, one-on-one sessions with a BASICS staff member. During these sessions, students will complete alcohol and drug use assessments, discuss their history of substance use, analyze their current use, and review alcohol and drug educational information.
There is no charge for the initial intake appointment; however, students who are required to complete BASICS will be required to pay a fee for the program. The fee schedule for BASICS is as follows:
- $0.00 for Self-referrals
- $125 for the first sanction
- $150 per subsequent sanction(s)
Is there a fee for not showing up for my appointment or arriving late? Yes, A No Show/Late fee of $30.00 per appointment will be applied for each missed appointment. Please reschedule your appointment by 4:00pm the prior day to avoid this fee. If you are more than 15 minutes late for any 1-hour appointment, then you will be responsible for the $30.00 No Show/Late Fee. Charges can be paid by cash, check, or these credit/debit cards: VISA, MasterCard, or American Express. Your payment can be made at the Student Health Cashier’s Desk. Charges may also be applied to Student Accounts.
What to do if you are sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion for an alcohol or drug violation:
Students who are sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion for an alcohol or drug violation should stop by the Student Health Center front desk or the Center for Wellness Promotion Administrative Assistant's desk, to schedule an initial 15-minute intake session. The phone number for the Center for Wellness Promotion appointment desk is 704‑687‑7407.
What will happen if you don't complete your sanction:
Students who fail to fully complete all requirements of their Wellness Promotion sanction will have a registration hold placed on their account. This means that they will not be able to register for classes for the next semester.
If you find that your registration has been blocked, contact the Dean of Students Office at 704‑687‑6569 to discuss what you must do to have the hold removed.
State of North Carolina Alcohol and/or Drug Violations
Occasionally, UNC Charlotte students will receive a state ticket for an alcohol or drug violation. These are different from Campus Appearance Tickets (CATs) and typically require students to appear in state court. Students who receive a state ticket often wish to know if they can go through the BASICS program at UNC Charlotte to satisfy court assessment requirements. The Center for Wellness Promotion CANNOT guarantee that the court system will allow students to go through our program rather than requiring an assessment and classes with an outside agency. Some students have been allowed to go through our program, others have not been allowed to do so.
